Statement by Natalie Crawford, Executive Director, Georgia First, Regarding State Election Board

Oct 18, 2024 | Democracy & Elections, News

This week saw multiple judicial rulings firmly repudiating the actions of Georgia’s State Election Board, determining definitely that the last-minute rule changes, enacted by the Board, violated state election laws and exceeded the Board’s authority under the Georgia Constitution. I applaud and celebrate these just, timely, and important rulings that place election fairness and the rule of law above hyper-partisanship.

Georgia First was proud to file multiple amici curiae in support of the recent lawsuits challenging the egregious and unlawful recent actions by a three-member majority voting bloc on the Board. As a lifelong Georgian and Republican, I, along with our cross-partisan Georgia First board members, have been deeply troubled by the continued misconduct and ill-informed, conspiracy theory-fueled rulemaking efforts of Election Board members Janice Johnston, Rick Jeffares, and Janelle King. Their actions threatened to cause electoral chaos, reflect poorly on the integrity of our state’s highly regarded electoral processes, and undermine trust in our democratic institutions. Ideology is not more important than facts and the law.

I want to recognize Eternal Vigilance Action, Scot Turner, and James Marshall for their fortitude in filing litigation, challenging the Board’s actions and authority under Georgia law. When there are such loud voices and forces at work within your own party, it takes courage to stand up for what is right. I also want to thank our partners – The Lincoln Project and legal counsel at Caplan Cobb – and the other organizations and individuals involved in these critical cases. I look forward to Election Day and urge all Georgians to vote.
